We have a fox terrier by the name of Jasper. He came to us in the summer of 2001 from the fox terrier rescue program. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this type of adoption, imagine taking in a 10 year old child whom you know nothing about and committing to doing your best to be a good parent.

A few years ago my wife and I went on a trip to Berlin. It was the middle of Winter. We decided to go for a walk with our two dogs, Boss and Chef, and enjoy the crisp cold air.
As we passed a small lake, Chef, a spunky schnauzer, ran out onto the frozen surface. We tried to stop him, but he wouldn’t listen. Slipping and sliding, he ran across the ice.

You called me your child, and despite a number of chewed shoes and a couple of murdered throw pillows, I became your best friend. Whenever I was “bad,” you’d shake your finger at me and ask “How could you?” — but then you’d relent and roll me over for a belly rub.
